The Cinema Foundation of Armenia recognizing the importance  of cultural initiatives for various groups of society, continues its collaboration with the Department of Social, Psychological and Legal Affairs of the Central Body of the Penitentiary Service. As part of this collaboration special screenings and events have been held in a number of penitentiary institutions.

At the “Nubarashen” penitentiary institution, a screening of director Bagrat Hovhannisyan’s film Autumn Sun was organized for prisoners. The film, based on the work of the same name by Hrant Matevosyan, explores the complexities of parent-child relationships within an Armenian rural family, highlighting emerging conflicts and ways to overcome them. Following the screening, Gohar Sargsyan, Head of the Department of Public Relations of the Cinema Foundation of Armenia, spoke about the filmmaking process and shared interesting moments from the production. The event concluded with a discussion and exchange of thoughts on the themes raised in the film.

At the “Vardashen” penitentiary institution, a screening of Albert Mkrtchyan’s film Tango of Our Childhood was held, presenting the story of another Armenian family - touching, deeply human, and rich with memories.

The film is autobiographical, based on the life of Albert Mkrtchyan and the story of his family, including his brother, the renowned actor Mher Mkrtchyan. During the discussion following the screening, Gayane Aghumyan, Head of the Department of Programs of the Cinema Foundation of Armenia, shared interesting moments from the filming process and drew parallels between Mher Mkrtchyan’s life and the film’s storyline. The discussion also explored the rich dynamics of the Armenian family, the role of women within it, and potential pathways for individual reintegration into society.

This is an ongoing initiative, with the Cinema Foundation of Armenia aiming to broaden its reach by involving more partner organizations and engaging a wider range of target groups. The aim of the program is to promote social integration, self-awareness, and the dissemination of cultural values through cinema. Upcoming plans include new screenings, discussions, and collaborative formats in institutions where cinema can serve as a platform for communication, emotional experience, and the opening of new opportunities.
